In the early hours of Monday morning, not long after the completion of the Pattaya Music Festival, police and medics were called to the scene of a fatal shooting which had occurred on Sukhumvit Road just past the soon-to-be-opened by-pass road heading north to Bangkok.
At the location they found the results of the usual motorbike gang violence which erupts almost every year away from the music festival. This time the result was the shooting death of a 14-year-old Thai schoolboy, shot through the right eye. Nearby was a 15-year-old Thai male who had been shot in the leg.
By the time journalists arrived at the scene two other wounded teenagers, one aged 17, the other 15 had already been sent to hospital for treatment.
On the road police found a number of spent cartridges belonging to a 9mm pistol and a small bore shotgun.
Officers interviewed gang members who said they had attended the final night of the Pattaya Music Festival and were riding home when they came upon a rival gang. The standard posturing associated with youthful Thai males on motorbikes late at night took place. This was followed by the usual production of loaded weapons and firing of same. Very often the aim of the shooters is not good and results only in a few flesh wounds. This time the aim was better with the result being one dead as well as three wounded.
Police will now try and find the shooters.
